Cough is the most common illness-related reason for outpatient visits. Acute bronchitis, also known as a chest cold, is characterized by a cough, with or without sputum production and most often caused by a viral infection. Other symptoms can include fever, runny nose or congestion, sore throat, headache and muscle aches. Studies have shown that 90% of cases of acute bronchitis are caused by a viral illness. The production of sputum, even when discolored, is common and does not correlate with a bacterial infection.

Because the cough associated with bronchitis is so bothersome and slow to resolve, patients often seek treatment. The duration of acute bronchitis-related cough is typically two to three weeks. Laboratory testing is usually not indicated in the evaluation of acute bronchitis.

Antibiotics should not be used for apparent viral upper respiratory tract infections lasting less than three weeks in otherwise healthy patients. Antibiotics do not significantly shorten illness duration and are associated with side effects and antibiotic resistance. Cough and cold medicines should not be recommended for respiratory illnesses in children younger than four years.

Symptomatic relief for viral illnesses may include:

  • Drink extra water and fluids
  • Use a cool mist vaporizer or saline nasal spray to relieve congestion
  • Use honey to relieve cough. Do not give honey to an infant younger than age one.

Valley-Wide Health Systems is participating in the Telligen Antibiotic Stewardship Initiative in an effort to use evidence-based strategies to reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescribing practices. You can call to schedule an appointment at 589-3658 or visit our Convenient Care Community Clinic at 1131 Main Street in Alamosa.
