Patients often ask me how to lose weight. They are bombarded with information about the risks and benefits of all types of foods and unfortunately a lot of this information is contradictory. I try to encourage patients not to focus on losing weight, or following a specific fad diet, but to focus on living healthy and making healthy food choices.

We need foods that nourish our bodies without excessive calories. Fruits and vegetable nourish our bodies by providing the vitamins and minerals necessary for health. For example, fruits and vegetables are high in potassium which lowers blood pressure.

Fruits and vegetables are also filling and low in calories. For example, a half cup of fruit contains about 30 calories and a half cup of most veggies contains about 15 calories.

Eating more calories than you burn leads to obesity, inflammation, insomnia and weight gain which can lead to many medical problems including diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. Most of the medical problems I treat each day are preventable with a healthy diet. So, maybe not “an apple a day” but definitely plenty of fruits and veggies a day can keep the doctor away!

Las frutas y verduras también llenan y no tienen muchas calorías.  Por ejemplo, una media de taza de fruta contiene alrededor de 30 calorías y una media taza de la mayoría de las verduras contiene alrededor de 15 calorías.

Comer más calorías de las que quema lleva a la obesidad, la inflamación, el insomnio y aumento de peso que puede conducir a muchos problemas de salud como la diabetes, apnea del sueño , presión arterial alta , colesterol alto , etc. La mayoría de los problemas médicos que tratamos cada día se pueden prevenir con una dieta saludable. Por lo tanto, no puede que una manzana al día, pero sin duda un montón de frutas y verduras al día puede mantener alejado al médico!
