News

While feeling ill or hurt can cause sadness or anxiety, many people do not recognize that moods can have effects on physical health. Stress, anxiety, and depression all raise body levels of a hormone called “cortisol”.  Short-term, this hormone can help us recover from stressful events.  However, over time high cortisol levels can cause problems, contributing to high blood sugar, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

A few tips for good mental and physical health:

  1. Get a good night’s sleep: Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep a night, and children need even more. Develop a bedtime routine to make falling asleep easier- avoid snacks, brush your teeth, and turn down lights.
  2. Exercise: While the CDC recommends 150 minutes of aerobic exercise each week for heart health, as little as 5 minutes of exercise can begin to improve brain function.
  3. Breathe deeply: Deep breathing exercises open up your lungs, improve posture, and cause your brain to send signals to your body to relax.
  4. Volunteer: People who volunteer tend to feel better about themselves and about their health. There are many great organizations in the valley who would appreciate your help!

Valley-Wide Health Systems is proud to partner with the San Luis Valley Behavioral Health Group to provide mental health services, including in-house counseling.  You can view their website at: http://slvbhg.org.
