Canon City, Colorado (June 20th, 2016) – Reach Out and Read Colorado, one of Colorado’s leading early literacy organizations, is hosting one of four Reach Out and Read Regional Conferences on Thursday, June 23rd at The Abbey Events Complex in Canon City, sponsored by Valley-Wide Health Systems, Inc.
The conference is a celebratory gathering of more than 20 community partners and health care professionals from the Southern Colorado region and will focus on a range of issues related to early childhood and literacy.
At the event, Reach Out and Read Colorado partners and providers will join forces to discuss key topics related to education and health. The keynote address will be given by Nancy Maday, the Children’s Services Division Head for the Pikes Peak Library District in Colorado Springs. Nancy has been a children’s librarian for over 30 years and is strongly committed to early literacy community outreach.
In addition, a panel of key community partners will discuss how their organizations support families and children in their earliest years, with a particular emphasis on early literacy. The panel includes Debora Black from Nurse Family Partnership, Jennifer Sanchez McDonald from the Huerfano Las Animas Early Childhood Council and Angie Shehorn from Children First and the Pueblo Early Childhood Council.
The 2016 Regional Literacy Champion Award will also be presented to Dr. Stella Ocampo, a pediatrician at the La Junta Clinic of Valley-Wide Health Systems, Inc. Dr. Ocampo is being recognized for the incredible contributions she has made to support early literacy in her community.
