Many people with Diabetes have taken steps to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet. This is a good thing because with Diabetes the body becomes less able to respond to changes in blood sugar levels. This happens mainly due to insulin resistance and/ or decreased insulin production. Insulin is a substance in your body that helps to get the sugar from your bloodstream into the body’s cells where it’s needed for fuel. When the sugar remains in the blood at high levels damage can occur.

Aside from medications like metformin, glipizide, insulin and regular exercise, it’s important to limit the highs and lows of your blood sugar levels. Minimizing sweets and especially soft drinks is of course very important. These cause the level of sugar in your blood to rise very rapidly. But sweets aren’t the only sources of sugar; starchy foods like noodles, tortillas, bread (even some of the dark colored wheat bread), pasta, rice, and potatoes have a great deal of simple sugar. And even fruit juices can have a lot of sugar.

What to do? Generally eating the whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. Eating the whole grain is better than eating foods made from flour. And as with many things, moderation is important. Exercise, too! You don’t have to prepare for the Olympics, just life!

Diabetes y azucares ocultos
