Gingivitis
The early stages of gum disease characterized by red, inflamed, bleeding gums. It is caused from an increase in plaque due to poor oral hygiene (lack of brushing and flossing). Gingivitis can be reversed by brushing twice per day for two minutes, flossing daily, and using a daily mouthwash. When it is not resolved it can progress to periodontitis.
Periodontitis
A serious gum infection that destroys the soft tissue and bone supporting your teeth. If it is left unresolved, it will lead to tooth mobility with eventual tooth loss. It is treated by scaling and root planning with frequent recall care through the dental office and improved oral hygiene habits at home. It takes both the individual and the dental team to arrest this disease.
