Many people look forward to a brand new year because it gives us a chance to “start over.” The number one New Year’s resolution is to “lose weight”. Losing weight helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol, eases pressure on joints, and just makes us feel good. Although there are many health benefits of losing weight, the truth is that it is hard to do on our own. In fact, most people give up their New Year’s resolution in about a month.

So how can you make 2017 different and make your weight loss resolution a reality? Here are some tips to help you achieve your goals:

  1. Make this a lifestyle change versus a diet. Think 5-2-1-0: five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity and zero sugary drinks. This is not a diet plan; it is a template for making healthier changes in your life. You are more likely to do something you can easily remember!
  2. Write it down. Many people underestimate what they eat. Writing down what you eat makes you more aware and can help you see where you can make changes.
  3. Don’t do it alone! Enlist the help of your primary care provider (PCP). Your PCP can help guide you to the right resources and help customize a plan that will work for you.
  4. Remember that no amount of exercise can undo poor food choices. Achieving weight loss and keeping it off is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week and stick to 5-2-1-0 most of the time.

We at Valley-Wide wish you a happy, healthy and lighter 2017!
