Breast cancer is a frightening but treatable cancer. It is important to detect it early so that it can be cured and/or treated in the least invasive way possible.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and the leading cause of cancer death in women. Mammograms are the single thing most likely to reduce death due to this cancer by allowing for early detection and treatment. A woman should discuss starting mammograms at age 40 in some cases, and in all cases they should occur yearly or every other year after age 50. Some women at high risk should start at age 35, and even some men should be screened with mammograms. Many women feel that if they have no family history, then they don’t need a mammogram. Yet the majority of women with breast cancer have no family history.

Women can decrease their risk of breast cancer by avoiding alcohol and smoking, by exercising regularly, by eating a healthful diet high in fruits and vegetables, and by having regularly scheduled mammograms. If a woman notices a breast mass, skin changes in the breast, or a nipple discharge, she should see her health care provider.

Women may qualify for breast and cervical cancer screening services free of charge under the Women’s Wellness Connection (WWC) program. Schedule your yearly exam today and ask about WWC.

Valley-Wide has clinics throughout the San Luis Valley. Valley-Wide accepts Medicaid, Medicare and most insurance plans. We have a sliding fee discount program for patients who qualify.
