Why is it important to take care of our children’s teeth? Kids need healthy teeth to eat, especially crunchy foods like vegetables. Cavities are painful and our children may not be able to explain what’s bothering them. It’s important to keep the primary teeth healthy as place holders for secondary teeth. And a bright white smile is beautiful.

How should we take care of our children’s teeth? Well, this can begin even before the first teeth appear (usually the 2 lower front teeth somewhere around 6 months). Breast feeding is a great start. If we bottle feed we should only use formula, and later milk and water. We should avoid juices and especially soft drinks. We should not let our kids fall asleep with a bottle in their mouths. Children should see the dentist before their first birthday. Valley-Wide healthcare providers are undergoing training to provide counseling and fluoride varnishing to children during their exams.

What else? We should brush twice a day with a soft bristle brush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste. For babies this should be a smear not much bigger than a grain of rice, and once our kids can spit we can use a pea-sized amount. Discuss fluoride supplements with your dental and medical providers. We should give our children milk with meals and water between meals to help rinse the teeth.

Free fluoride varnishing for children between 1 and 4 years old will be available (limited slots available) on Thursday July 20th from 8:30 am to 10:00 am at the Valley-Wide Health Systems Administrative Services Building located at 128 Market Street in Alamosa. Please call 719-587-1000 to sign up for this free service.
