As soon-to-be-moms whether to breastfeed is one of the first big decisions we make for our baby. We know that breastfeeding is preferred and recommended by health professionals. The Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months and then breastfeeding with complementary foods being introduced for up to one year or longer.
At WIC we strive to promote and encourage all expecting moms to breastfeed their babies. Breastfeeding provides many health benefits for not just baby but moms alike. Breastfed babies tend to have fewer ear infections and upper respiratory infections, and decreased risks for childhood obesity, some childhood cancers and juvenile diabetes. For moms the benefits are just as amazing. Breastfeeding moms decrease their chances for developing diabetes, breast cancer, cervical cancer and osteoporosis later in life and it helps decrease the risk of postpartum depression.
August is World Breastfeeding Month, a time when communities and organizations all over the world come together to bring awareness for breastfeeding, its benefits, and its sustainability. The State of Colorado decided to go with “Find Your Village” as this year’s theme. Our “Village” in the San Luis Valley is comprised of many individuals who have earned certification as breastfeeding specialists, ready to support families with new babies.
The Alamosa WIC office will be hosting a fun breastfeeding event for families and kids with organizations and resources from around the area promoting their programs and how they play a role in our “Village.” Please come out to celebrate breastfeeding and our growing “Village” with snacks and family activities on August 16th at Cole Park close to the playground from 10am to 1pm.
