You know you have them – those bottles of pills and other prescription medications that have expired or gone unused for years. They’re in the back of your bathroom drawer or on the top shelf of a medicine cabinet. And you’re not alone. Did you know the average American household has four pounds of prescribed and over-the-counter medicines?

Here’s the concern:

Here’s the concern: those prescriptions can be items that we don’t want to fall into kids’ hands, either by accident, or because someone’s looking for a way to get high. Teens say prescription medicines are easier to get than beer, because they can access them from their friends’ and families’ medicine cabinets.

Disposing of old medications is now safer and easier than ever before! There’s now a solution to getting rid of those troubling medicines. Thanks to new funding from the State of Colorado Valley-Wide Health Systems recently installed a household medication drop box in its Alamosa Family Medical Center clinic at 1710 First Street.

Eric Wolfe, R.PH

Using the drop box is simple. Gather your unused or expired prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, even vitamins. Simply cross out your name on any labels (for your privacy) and place the meds in the drop box, containers and all. Or, if you want to collect pills in a clear plastic bag, drop that in. Other medications, like ointments, liquids and patches are okay as well. (There are some limits on what you can’t drop off; those are posted on the box, like sharps and marijuana.) The Valley-Wide pharmacists will package up the discarded materials and a state contractor will safely eradicate them through incineration.
