The average life expectancy of men is 5 years shorter than that of women in the United States.  Men: improve your health starting with these healthier choices:

1. Stop smoking! Cigarettes lead to more than lung cancer. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and chronic lung disease in addition to many cancers, including mouth, throat, stomach, pancreas and bladder.

2. Limit Alcohol. In the short-term, alcohol abuse can lead to car accidents, violence and risky behaviors.  Long-term, excess alcohol use can cause liver disease, liver cancer, heart disease, dementia and depression.  How much is too much? Talk to your doctor.

3. Make Healthy, Safe Choices.  Men are significantly more likely than women to die from preventable causes such as homicide, suicide, poisoning, car accidents, and HIV.  Think before you act and don’t be afraid to ask for help.  Strive for 5 fruits and vegetables per day, lean proteins, and little or no refined carbohydrates (sugar, soda, white bread, tortillas). Exercise 150 minutes per week. Drive safely; always wear your seatbelt

4. Visit Your Doctor.  Don’t wait until you feel sick to see a doctor. Prevent disease by seeing your primary care provider (PCP) every 1-2 years starting at age 18.  Discuss with your doctor what tests are right for you depending on your age, medical problems,
and family history.
