Pain is something that every person has at some point in time. In fact, if we are not able to feel pain it is extremely dangerous for us! Even though pain is a necessary part of life, many people are living in constant pain that is not normal. How does this happen?

Pain starts when a danger signal is sent from the nerves up to the brain and the brain creates a pain signal. The nerves continue to send many signals and the brain continues to protect with pain usually until the healing process is finished.

However, in some people this process between the nerves and brain lasts much longer than it takes for the body to heal. That is how an ankle sprain can still be painful a year after it first happened, despite the tissue being healed. The same thing can happen throughout the body.

The best way to help this type of pain is through movement. This does not mean “no pain, no gain”, but the nerves and brain need motion to function properly. If you struggle with chronic pain, try starting with some gentle exercise such as walking or riding a bike for 5 to 10 minutes every day. You can gradually increase how fast or how long you go over several weeks and months. Physical therapy is also helpful for giving personalized exercise to start on a process of recovery. Having an active lifestyle is important for all health, including your pain.

Viviendo En Dolor

El dolor es algo que cada persona tiene en algún punto de su vida. ¡En realidad, si no somos capaces de sentir dolor es algo muy peligroso para nosotros!  Aunque el dolor es necesario, mucha gente vive con dolor constante que no es normal.

El dolor empieza cuando una señal de peligro se envía desde los nervios al cerebro, y el cerebro crea el dolor.  Este proceso continúa hasta que todo se sana.  Sin embargo, en algunas personas este proceso entre los nervios y el cerebro dura mucho más tiemp de lo que el cuerpo se tarda para sanar.  Así es como una torcedura del tobillo puede ser dolorosa hasta un año después, a pesar de que el tejido haya sanado.  Lo mismo puede ocurrir por todo el cuerpo.

El mejor modo para aliviar el dolor crónico es a través del movimiento.  Esto no quiere decir  “ningún dolor, ningún beneficio” pero los nervios y el cerebro necesitan movimiento.  Si Usted vive con el dolor, trate de empezar con algún ejercicio suave, tal como caminar por 5 a 10 minutos cada día.  Incremente gradualmente la velocidad y la duración por varios meses.  La terapía física también es útil para dar ejercicio personalizado para empezar a moverse. Tener un estilo de vida activo es importante para toda la salud, incluyendo su dolor.
