Dry Needling is a technique utilized to restore normal muscle function.  A thin filament needle is used to decrease muscle stimulation from the nerve causing a trigger point.  Trigger points are sensitive areas within a muscle that cause referral pain.  They cause the muscle to be in a shortened state resulting in pain and reduced functional movements.  The treatment can be uncomfortable at the time as the needle causes the muscle to twitch.  Once this occurs, the muscle relaxes and thus decreases muscle pain.

Is Dry Needling Acupuncture?  While the two treatments share a common treatment tool, thin filament needles, they are not the same treatment.  Dry Needling is based on the orthopedic model addressing muscular pain and dysfunctional movement patterns while acupuncture is rooted in Eastern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine.

Dry Needling has been found in the clinic to be effective in the treatment of neck pain, low back pain, carpal tunnel symptoms, headaches, sciatica, shoulder pain, IT-band and other associated pain symptoms.  Dry Needling techniques are currently being utilized with excellent results for patient populations ranging from athletes and labor workers to more sedentary or elderly populations.

If you have muscle pain or limited functional mobility, ask your doctor about the possibility of Dry Needling and come see us at Valley-Wide Physical Therapy.  This service is offered in all four of our clinics, so call or stop by for more information.
