Welcome to the time of year when snacks and sweets are plentiful.  If you’re like most of us, it’s hard to say no to all those goodies!  But, you can still keep your risk of developing cavities in check.  Below are a few tips to keep your smile merry and bright:

  • Drink plenty of water during the day.  Eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day is the goal.
  • Chew sugar-free gum containing XYLITOL after snacking.  Xylitol is a sugar that bacteria in your mouth cannot digest, so the bacteria cannot start the cavity process.
  • Brush your gum-line gently with fluoride toothpaste for 2 minutes, morning and night.  Floss between your teeth every day.
  • Eating rough foods like apples and carrots at the end of a snack or meal can also help clean your teeth.  Those rough foods can help remove soft food that gets stuck on the chewing surfaces of your teeth.
