When does medical care start for our children? Care for our future children (Prenatal Care) should begin before they are ever conceived. Family planning and birth control are a great way to allow mothers to create a healthy and stable environment when they decide to have children; however nearly half of all pregnancies are unintended. This is why preconception care should be part of the medical care for all reproductive-aged women even before they become pregnant.

For example, all women who are considering becoming pregnant or at risk for unintended pregnancy should take folic acid supplementation to prevent birth defects. Working to achieve a healthy weight can help avoid the complications of pregnancy that come with being overweight- including diabetes, high blood pressure, and fetal growth issues. Screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections prior to conception is also crucial for ensuring a healthy pregnancy, as is being up to date on immunizations. Many young women may also use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs that can be very harmful to the fetus, and interventions to get this substance abuse under control should not wait until she finds out she is pregnant.

With the current Zika virus outbreak, pregnancy planning is more important than ever. The best way to prevent infection is to prevent mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves and pants, as well as insect repellants containing DEET or lemon eucalyptus oil, both of which are safe in pregnancy.  Zika can also be sexually transmitted, so using a barrier method like condoms is crucial in avoiding infection.

For more information, please schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or visit the CDC’s website on preconception care.
