Living here in a high-altitude desert, summer is a time we all joyfully anticipate! In our rush to enjoy the too-short months of summer, we could easily overlook some summer safety tips. A quick safety review can make a BIG difference. Who wants to get injured or ill on vacation, right?!

Summer Safety Tips for Keeping Camping, Hiking, and Boating Safe, but Fun:

  • Bring a first aid kit
  • Pack in water if not readily supplied
  • Never leave a campfire unattended. Period.
  •  Avoid leaving food in your campsite. If you do, put it in air-tight containers; secure the ice chest, and dispose of the trash properly. Wild animals frequent our area and they are always ready for a free meal!
  • Wear a life jacket while on the boat / jet ski
  • NEVER use gas stoves, space heaters, grills, or other flammable equipment in or near your tent. Both fire and carbon monoxide poisoning are potential hazards
  • Use an insect repellent with at least 20% DEET. Mosquitos LOVE the San Luis Valley and some of them are packing the West Nile Virus. Avoid being their meal if at all possible!!
  • If you drink alcohol, do not drive –> the car nor the boat/jet ski
  • Always swim where there is a lifeguard, or have a buddy
  • Grab a buddy and do a “tick check” daily
