Receiving prenatal care during a pregnancy is important for many reasons.  Getting regular prenatal care check-ups is valuable for the health of both the woman and her future child.

A health history is taken during one of the initial visits to identify risk factors during the pregnancy.  Often risk factors can be treated and complications during the pregnancy or the labor can be avoided.

A physical exam is done during one of the initial visits to identify problems that can be treated or anticipated during pregnancy and delivery.  Lab work is done in early, mid and late pregnancy to find things such as diabetes, infection and anemia, all of which can be treated.  Additional lab work can be ordered at the discretion of the provider and the patient.  Genetic testing to rule out chromosomal abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome can now be done with a blood test.

Regular visits are scheduled for pregnant patients to make sure that new problems have not developed. These visits are also used to plan for labor and delivery, anticipate postpartum contraception and provide education and guidance about breast feeding, circumcision of a male infant and other specific topics.

Prenatal services are covered by traditional insurance, Medicaid and migrant health programs.  If a woman is finding the fees unaffordable there are a number of programs available to assist her.  Prenatal care is available by Valley-Wide Health Systems providers.
