SKIN,SKIN…IT HOLDS US IN…and we should take care of it. Skin care is one of the most important things you can do for a healthy body.

One way to care for the skin is to avoid skin cancer. Most skin cancers are preventable and this is done by avoiding the damaging effects of UV radiation from the sun. This is especially important because the San Luis Valley is both sunny and at high altitude, both of which increase our daily exposure to these UV rays. Even one severe sunburn can increase a person’s chance of getting skin cancer in their lifetime, so it is wise to be vigilant. Continued vigilance over time is important as well, as the effects of UV are cumulative.

How do we protect ourselves from damage?

  • Avoid sun exposure in the middle of the day when our location is closest to the sun and the UV exposure is the greatest.
  • Use sunscreen year-round, choose an SPF product of at least 15, and reapply every 2 hours when outdoors.
  • Wear sun-protective clothing. Wear a hat that has a brim ALL THE WAY AROUND.
  • Use sunglasses-both to protect the retina from sun exposure and to help prevent cataracts.
  • Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications that require extra vigilance.
  • Never, never use a tanning bed. These devices emit the same UV radiation as the sun, and tanning does not protect the skin from skin cancer.

Please enjoy the outdoors, while working or playing, but take care of your skin as well.

La Importancia del Cuidado de la Piel

PIEL, PIEL…NOS CONTIENE…y debemos cuidarla.
