As we enter into the middle of our winter season, it is important to remind ourselves of a few important winter health tips.

Frostbite: Frostbite occurs most often on the face, nose, ears, fingers and toes so it’s important to remember to wear a hat and gloves. It is recognized by hard, white skin and is typically not painful. If you experience frostbite, act immediately. Warm the area slowly by wrapping it in a blanket, putting your hands in your armpits or using lukewarm (not hot) water. DO NOT rub the area, this can cause more damage to the frozen skin.

Sunlight and Mood: During the winter, we tend to get less sun exposure than in the summer. Less sunlight can lead to changes in our mood and feeling more down than usual. It is important to go outside when possible (while avoiding frostbite!). This may mean taking a break from work or using your lunch break for a small walk outside or enjoying an outdoor activity such as winter hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or downhill skiing.

Shoveling: Snow can be heavy! Be careful when you are shoveling; use your legs to lift rather than your back. Take frequent breaks to go inside to warm up and give your muscles a chance to relax. It is important to stretch your arms, legs and back after shoveling to relax tight muscles.

Congelación: La congelación se produce con mayor frecuencia en la cara, la nariz, las orejas, los dedos de manos y pies, así que es importante usar un sombrero y guantes. Tome descansos frecuentes valla adentro para calentarse y dar a sus músculos la oportunidad de relajarse.
