In a fantastic display of service and outreach, Ed Medina and Norma Jaquez recently traveled to Ecuador for a medical mission. Medina is a Physician’s Assistant at Valley-Wide Convenient Care Community Clinic, while Jaquez is a Licensed Practical Nurse at Valley-Wide San Luis Health Center.
“It’s an honor to serve those who have very limited access to healthcare due to poverty,” explained Medina.
Medina and Jaquez, who were also accompanied by Ed’s wife Cathy, traveled to the Ahuano region of Ecuador in the Amazon rain forest. They traveled the throughout the region via canoe and also walked along the river to serve different villages. The medical mission was in partnership with Franciscan University.
The medical team that traveled to Ecuador treated over 600 people who have limited access to medical resources.
Both Medina and Jaquez were part of a team that treated approximately 600 people with skin problems, infections, parasites, ear infections, coughs, and oral health issues. Overall, 13 medical providers and two dentists participated.
“The medical mission was a great success,” said Jaquez. “The people we encountered were so grateful for the healthcare that was provided to them.”
This was Jaquez’s first medical mission. It was Medina’s second.
“The appreciation and joy of the people is amazing,” said Medina. “It was a very rewarding experience.”
