Encouraging kids to learn to read is important! With this in mind welcome to the Reach Out & Read program available at all Valley-Wide medical clinics!
In the Reach Out & Read program medical providers are trained to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud to their children. And they are trained to give books to children. The focus is on checkups for children from 6 months to 5 years of age, with a special emphasis on children growing up in poverty. Reach Out & Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers. The program helps encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading.
In the exam room, providers encourage parents to read aloud to their young children. They offer tips like what books to choose and how to make reading fun. Providers give every child between the ages of 6 months and 5 years a new, age-appropriate children’s book to take home and keep. In Valley-Wide clinics gently-used books are available for all children to take home.
The providers at the clinics have a 97% rate of handing out books at child-well visits. Providers give thousands of books to children ever year at Valley-Wide.
