On Tuesday June 24th, 165 people joined the “Cooking Matters at the Store” grocery store tour event at City Market in Alamosa. Community members were invited to participate in the event, which featured five stations throughout the store. Each station taught participants about making healthy choices when purchasing food, especially on a budget. Stations featured information about whole grains, fruits and vegetables, protein sources, and dairy foods. The event was sponsored jointly by Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters Program in the San Luis Valley, Valley-Wide Health Systems WIC Program, and City Market. As part of its 40th year anniversary celebration, the local WIC (Women Infants and Children) Program hosted a station at the event to inform the community about its nutrition and breastfeeding educational resources and program benefits.
